But the finger-crossing paid off. I found out today that I'll be interning with The New Republic in Washington, DC for the summer. The internship is unpaid, but if we write something they print we'll get paid like freelancers (so not much, but something). I'll still be broke after this summer, but I'll be a broke person with some great experiences. Woo-hoo!

Broke but Experienced
The usual race for summer employment for law students begins when first semester grades are given. That means a lot of my classmates have had their summer plans in place for months. Although magazines and newspapers do offer summer internships, their timelines are way different from legal ones. Most of my friends had employment figured out months ago, and I was still crossing my fingers over Spring Break.

Guess you won't be riding in a boat with T-Pain anytime soon.
Congratulations. Great opportunity.
That is a phenomenal opportunity with a more fulfilling potential career trajectory than any BigLaw summer associate gig. I knew people back in my undergraduate and law school days who would have had sex with Seth Rogen for a summer internship at The New Republic.
Congratulations.
Meanwhile, I f*cking got laid off recently.
signed,
bitter former biglaw associate
As an incoming law student, I'm wondering where interns stay on this summer associate jobs? How do you pay for the expenses?
Broke but experienced . . . that's what I said after I lost my virginity to a prostitute on the HBO Show "CatHouse"
That's probably a better fit for you than the live blogging, especially after your disastrous attempt at ATL. Guess they weren't jumping to have you back, those commenters are pretty harsh though. Also, no writers, even really successful ones, make a ton of money, so it doesn't get much better.
I am SO PROUD OF YOU and excited for your experience at New Republic. I'm confident you will rock it!
Also, I think a lot of the commentators from ATL were just miserable, jealous crumegeons.
Your biggest fan!
I thought you signed a book deal, you cant really be that broke?
Anonomous detracters can't be taken seriously. This is a great opportunity! Good luck!
@ 1:39 - Dude a first time author may not get anything for a book advance or realistic / best case a token, small amount of money($5k to $15k after agent cut) which I'm guessing SEN was somewhere in the range of. That barely puts a dent in one year of law school, so still being broke / in debt is to be expected.
For sure, 1:05. As for expenses, it will be difficult this summer. Because it's not a legal internship, I can't get class credit for it which means I can't get school loans. I'll be living in GW's dorms, which will be very weird as a 24 year old. The internship is unpaid. Basically, my family is being very generous and helping me out for the summer, and I'll probably get a weekend gig of some sort to fill the gaps. I just really, really hope it's not in food service.
Yeah, living in the dorms will blow, especially if you have roommates. I wouldn't be calling that generous.
