When I was pulling into my driveway the other day, my neighbor's dog ran out in front of my car. I (barely) managed to avoid hitting it. After catching my breath, my first thought was: How much would I owe my neighbor if I had actually hit the dog?
Second thought: Does thinking this make me a bad person, or a future lawyer?
Third thought: Or, does it make me BOTH a bad person AND a future lawyer?

If you're wondering whether you're thinking like a stereotypical future lawyer, I'd say no. Unless your first thought was to sue the dog's owners (like this guy), you're just thinking like a concerned driver.
The Anglo-Saxons called it wergild. You better watch your back. Your neighbors might not want money.
